At Tynemouth Decorators, we are honoured to have played a part in the remarkable DIY SOS and Strictly Come Dancing collaboration to transform a derelict building in Wallsend into a vibrant space for True Colours Theatre. This inclusive theatre school provides a safe, creative haven for children and young people with additional needs, including autism, ADHD, anxiety disorders, and various physical and mental health challenges.
A Challenging Build with a Worthy Cause
The project, led by Nick Knowles and Gaby Blackman, was one of the toughest DIY SOS builds to date. With structural challenges and a tight six-day timeframe, tradespeople and volunteers across the North East worked tirelessly to bring this ambitious vision to life. From late nights to early mornings, the determination and generosity of everyone involved made it possible to deliver a stunning interior, a sensory garden, and an outdoor performance area for the charity.
Our Role in the Project
As passionate supporters of community initiatives, the team at Tynemouth Decorators donated our time, expertise, and materials to this transformative project. Being part of such a heartwarming collaboration was an incredible experience, allowing us to contribute to a space that will inspire creativity, inclusivity, and hope for years to come.
A Star-Studded Effort
The project also saw the involvement of Strictly Come Dancing stars Anton Du Beke, Katya Jones, and Graziano di Prima. Their presence brought a unique energy to the build, as they engaged with students and volunteers alike. Graziano’s heartfelt conversations with young dancers, sharing his personal experiences, added a deeply emotional layer to the project.
A Theatre of Dreams
What once resembled a derelict structure described by Nick Knowles as “more like a farmer’s cattle shed than a theatre of dreams” is now a beautiful, functional space ready to open its doors. True Colours Theatre is set to begin its new chapter, providing opportunities for children and young people to express themselves, develop skills, and find joy in the performing arts.
Grateful to Give Back
Being a part of this incredible journey aligns with our mission at Tynemouth Decorators to make a difference in our community. We are proud to have contributed to this inspiring transformation and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the lives of so many young people.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered, collaborated, and supported this project. Together, we’ve turned a dream into reality.
